Futura

The 2021 Italian documentary made jointly by Pietro Marcello, Francesco Munzi and Alice Rohrwacher puts the same questions to teenagers across the country: where do you live, what do you want to become, how does the future look to you. The three directors set out separately and filmed in different regions. The method is simple and repetitive; its force comes from comparison. The difference between the answers given in the north and the south, in a vocational school and a conservatoire, maps Italy's own inequality. Filming was interrupted by the pandemic, and that changed how the young people saw the future midway through; the break is left inside the film. Who it's for: viewers interested in social documentary and portraits of a generation. Who it's not for: anyone wanting narrative progression, or who will find a series of interviews monotonous.
