Evil Dead Rise

Lee Cronin, from Dublin, follows The Hole in the Ground by moving the series from the cabin into an apartment block. Producer Rob Tapert set the measure: Evil Dead films are about innocent people trapped. Cronin narrowed the geography on purpose, skipping the middle floors and keeping only the top floor and the basement. The Los Angeles building is not real: the interiors were built in a rented warehouse in Mount Wellington, New Zealand, and the shoot ran from 6 June to 27 October 2021. Cronin solved the effects on set, saying every punch, stab and jump was done by pulling strings by hand around that playground. Alyssa Sutherland’s climb up the bathroom wall is a stunt double’s; the actress has said she was not allowed to do it. The third act needed 6500 litres of fake blood, cooked by a hired industrial kitchen. The film had been bought for HBO Max; the switch to cinemas was announced on 24 August 2022, and Bruce Campbell summed it up: no cabin any more, a single mother in the city. It took 147.1 million dollars worldwide. A good fit if you want a trap squeezed into two floors, not a building to explore. Not for you if you count on horror films leaving children alone, because that rule does not hold here.
