The Evil Dead

Sam Raimi shot a sample before the film itself. Within the Woods, a short made to show investors what the picture would look like, cost 1,600 dollars, and the budget came from walking that reel around friends. Photography took place at a remote cabin near Morristown, Tennessee. Using the camera as the evil itself was just as plain: it was screwed to a plank and two people carried it at a run. That is why the unseen thing has a height and a speed, never a floating ghost. The demon contact lenses could not be borne beyond about 15 minutes; Bruce Campbell compared them to food containers over his eyes. Joel Coen was an assistant editor here, and later used the same sample reel method to finance Blood Simple. Which copy you are watching is a real question. By the BBFC record the British release was cut in 1982, the 1990 video certificate was still cut, and the uncut version was only passed in 2001. Raimi apologised for the sexual violence scene in a 1988 interview with Jonathan Ross, calling the decision unnecessary. A good fit if you accept never seeing the evil, only the run of a camera bolted to a plank. Not for anyone unwilling to sit through the scene named above.
