What For Love of the Game Is About

A baseball pitcher at the end of his career takes the mound for the last game of the season. That same morning the woman he has been with for years has left him. The film runs the game in real time and tells the relationship in flashbacks between pitches. The narrative deliberately levels the two: his concentration works on the mound and never worked in his life. Sam Raimi directed, with Kevin Costner in the lead, adapting a novel. The director has said the studio shortened his cut. Who it's for: those who like baseball and slow romantic drama. Who it's not for: viewers who do not know the sport; the film assumes you can follow a game, and it runs over two hours.
