What Facing Ali Is About
Ten boxers who faced Muhammad Ali in the ring do the talking: George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, Ken Norton, George Chuvalo, Henry Cooper, Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers, Leon Spinks and Ernie Terrell. Each remembers his fight with Ali, and what they say goes well past the fight itself: how their careers ended, what boxing did to their bodies, and what it meant to live in Ali's shadow. Pete McCormack's documentary never puts Ali himself in front of the camera; we only see him from the other side. That choice takes the film out of the territory of tribute and turns it into the story of an entire generation.
