What Falco: Damn It, We're Still Alive! Is About
Johann Holzel was playing bass in the Viennese punk band Drahdiwaberl when he took the name Falco, and within a few years he was the only singer ever to take a German-language song to the top of the American charts. Der Kommissar, Vienna Calling and Rock Me Amadeus arrive one after another, and then the descent: drink, cocaine, an emptying well, and a life that ended in the Dominican Republic in 1998. Thomas Roth puts Manuel Rubey in the part and never quite escapes the standard shape of the music biopic. What it does get at is real enough, though: a small country's provincial feeling and worldwide stardom do not sit easily in the same body. The title is borrowed from one of Falco's own songs.
