What Family Ties Is About
The Korean title translates as the birth of a family, and the film is built in three sections, the first two running at roughly the same time. In the first, Mi-ra has an orderly and solitary life running a small restaurant until her brother Hyung-chul turns up fresh out of prison with a new wife, Mu-shin, who is much older than he is. Kim Tae-yong’s second feature looks at how families that are not built on blood manage to exist, coming at it from three directions. It opened on 18 May 2006 and was misread from the start because its posters sold it as slapstick. It is now counted among the hundred most iconic Korean films. Moon So-ri, Uhm Tae-woong and Go Doo-shim star.
