Wonderland

A company brings dead people back as artificial intelligences. The service is called Wonderland: a person's data, video and voice are processed, and those left behind can hold a video call with them. The narrative carries several lines together. A mother recreates herself as an archaeologist for her small daughter; a woman talking to the digital version of her comatose boyfriend has to compare the two when he actually wakes up. Kim Tae-yong directs. The cast includes Tang Wei, Suzy, Park Bo-gum and Choi Woo-shik. The history of the production is part of the story. It was shot before the pandemic and held for years; by the time it was released in 2024 its subject was no longer science fiction but a live argument. The question it asks is moral rather than technical: who is the substitute for the dead person actually for. The answer has to do with grief. The Wonderland service serves the survivor, not the deceased, and the narrative shows the point at which that does harm. Its weakness is structure. Three or four separate stories run at equal weight, none goes deep, and some close without resolution. The visual design is soft and bright; the digital world is deliberately never made frightening. Who it is for: viewers who like Korean melodrama and stories built on artificial intelligence and mourning. Who it is not for: the narrative is scattered, the emotional pitch is high, and the idea is explained aloud more than once.
