In 1957 Gustaf Gründgens staged Goethe’s Faust anew and once again took the part of Mephisto, which he had been playing since 1932; the production drew great interest and ran for years. In 1959 Peter Gorski filmed that staging, and it was his first work as a director. The film is essentially a record of the production, but by using medium and close shots liberally Gorski makes visible details of the acting that could not be seen from a theatre seat; the small changes on Mephisto’s face can be read on screen. In the hundred and twenty eight minute German production Will Quadflieg plays Faust and Gründgens plays Mephisto. It was completed in 1960.
