What Fear of Water Is About
The story is set in the Magdalen Islands, off Quebec. It is a small and closed island community. André Surprenant serves there as a sergeant. He lives with his teenage daughter. His life runs in order and without incident. One morning a woman of eighteen is found dead. Her name is Rosalie Richard and she is the mayor’s daughter. The body is at the foot of a cliff by the sea. It becomes clear she was sexually assaulted before she died. Nothing like it has happened on the islands before. The investigation sets the whole community against itself. Everyone knows everyone, so every lead points at somebody’s relative. Surprenant’s own life is shaken as well. He is afraid of water and the fear weighs on the work. The film was adapted from a novel by Jean Lemieux published in 2003. Pierre-François Legendre and Brigitte Pogonat appear in the hundred and twenty two minute film, a Canadian production Gabriel Pelletier finished in 2012.
