An old man works a ferry beside a village. One evening he takes a passenger dressed in black across. The passenger says nothing the whole way. The old man dies that night. Some time later a young woman comes to the village. Maria has no work and nowhere to stay. She takes over the ferry. The next evening a wounded man boards it. There are men pursuing him. Maria hides him in her hut. She tends his wound and nurses him back to health. Then the passenger in black appears on the far shore. The woman takes him across. On the way he breaks his silence and asks about the wounded man. Sybille Schmitz and Aribert Mog appear in the eighty five minute film, a German production Frank Wisbar finished in 1936.
