What Festival Express Is About
In the summer of 1970 a chartered train crossed Canada from one end to the other carrying some of the biggest rock bands in the world. The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, Buddy Guy, the Flying Burrito Brothers and Delaney and Bonnie lived, played and drank in the same carriages for five days. The train stopped in Toronto, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Calgary, and at every stop there was a concert. All of it was filmed at the time, but the footage sat in storage for close to thirty years without being shown to anyone. Bob Smeaton made a documentary out of it. The inside of the train is as much the material as the stage performances, and the nights when nobody was posing for the camera and everyone was playing for themselves are the liveliest part of the film. Joplin's death later that same year makes the footage more valuable still.
