What Gimme Shelter Is About

The Maysles brothers set out to film the Rolling Stones' 1969 American tour and history turned while the camera was running. Security at Altamont, staged as the closing concert, was handed to members of the Hells Angels, the crowd went past control, and eighteen year old Meredith Hunter was stabbed to death in front of the stage. The camera recorded it. The most shaking passage in the film is the aftermath: Mick Jagger at an editing bench, running the footage frame by frame, trying to work out what happened. The documentary is routinely cited as the announcement that the sixties were over, but its real force is elsewhere, in showing how quickly a crowd becomes something else. Who it is for: viewers interested in music documentary and the end of the sixties. Who it is not for: anyone who would rather not watch a real death.
