What Elephants and Grass Is About
Havva is an athlete knocking on official doors to raise the money her brother's treatment will cost, and the minister who ought to help her is never available. That same minister serves the state with one hand and runs darker business with the other. Derviş Zaim braids several stories together and lets them meet in the hotel where Havva collects her food aid, so that the state and the mob end up sharing one lobby. The film carries the air of Turkey after the Susurluk scandal and clears nobody. It swept the Antalya festival, taking the jury special prize along with director, actress, editing, art direction and supporting actor.
