Finding the Money

The documentary follows an economist. Her name is Stephanie Kelton. She argues for Modern Monetary Theory. It is known as MMT for short. The national debt sits at the centre of the argument. There is a debt clock in New York. The number on it keeps climbing. Kelton says that number is not a debt owed by taxpayers. She describes it instead as the sum of the dollars the government has created and the rest of us now hold. The film sets out that case at length. It also gives room to the other side, where economists from across the political spectrum reject the theory in blunt terms. The argument is tied to climate and inequality as well. Jason Furman and Fadhel Kaboub appear in the ninety five minute film, an American production Maren Poitras finished in 2024.
