What Firefly Dreams Is About
Naomi is seventeen. She grew up in Nagoya. Her parents separate. That break turns her life around. She is sent off to the country. There she is to work at her aunt’s inn. She does the work without wanting to. Then something else is asked of her. She is to look after an elderly relative. The woman is called Koide. Koide has Alzheimer’s disease. Naomi wants nothing to do with it at first. As the summer goes on something forms between them. The difference in age stops being an obstacle. The film was John Williams’s first feature. Williams is English and has lived in Japan since 1988, and the money for the film came entirely from Japan. It was named best film at the Hawaii Film Festival. Maho and Yoshie Minami appear in the hundred and five minute film, a Japanese production John Williams finished in 2001.
