Five Seconds

An Italian film set in a valley in Tuscany. Adriano is fifty and lives alone. He stays in the converted stables of a crumbling villa and sees nobody. There is something heavy in his past. The film does not explain it at once; it gives it in pieces, between conversations. One day people arrive at the villa. A young group takes over the empty building and wants to bring the abandoned vineyards back into use. Matilde is at their head. Adriano does not like it. Noise, a crowd and constant movement; his quiet is broken. From there the film is a story of adjustment. Work in the vines, a harvest, a tractor, shared meals, and a distance that keeps shrinking. What the narrative is interested in is not farming but guilt: what the man carries is an accident, and the film resolves it not through forgiveness but through learning to live beside it. The title comes from that accident. Something that happened in five seconds, and the man has been passing through those seconds over and over for years. The young people's project is not easy either. There is no money, no knowledge, and the vines have not been tended for years; the narrative does not turn it into a fable of rescue. The cinematographer is Luca Bigazzi and the light is built entirely in natural conditions. The film was shown at the Rome Film Festival on the eighteenth of October 2025 and opened in Italy on the thirtieth. Valerio Mastandrea, Galatea Bellugi, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Ilaria Spada are in the cast. Paolo Virzì directed and co-wrote. Who it is for: anyone who likes calm Italian rural drama. Who it is not for: anyone looking for incident; the narrative is slow and the real matter opens very late.
