Five Superfighters

Three students of martial arts and their teacher are badly beaten by a wandering man. The man declares himself a corrector of bad kung fu. The three students go their separate ways to win back their teacher’s honour and their own. Each looks for a master who will take him on as a student. The film puts the passages of training at the centre; as much preparation is shown as fighting. What drives the account is less the shame of defeat than the question of what was missing. It comes from the vein of Hong Kong cinema of 1979 that put fight choreography to the front. Kwan Fung and Austin Wai Tin-Chi appear in John Law Ma’s hundred minute Hong Kong film, completed in 1979.
