What Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe Is About
A serial adventure from the start of the 1940s, shown in chapters and running past three hours when assembled. As a mysterious plague called the Purple Death sweeps the earth, Doctor Zarkov takes his ship up to investigate and finds a vessel from the planet Mongo seeding the atmosphere with dust. The one responsible is, as always, Ming the Merciless, and Flash, Dale and Zarkov head back to Mongo. It runs on the old pattern of cutting each chapter at a moment of danger and calling the audience back next week, built on pace rather than logic. Buster Crabbe plays Flash for the third and final time. It is one of the sources later science fiction cinema openly drew on.
