What Flesh Out Is About
Verida works in a beauty salon in Mauritania and spends her time on social media. When her family picks a husband for her she has three months, and in those three months she is to put on weight. The country has a practice called gavage: the systematic feeding of a bride before the wedding, because a full body reads as beauty, prosperity and standing. Verida starts eating six meals a day and weighing herself constantly. Michela Occhipinti's first feature neither exoticises this nor reduces it to a one line moral. It looks at the point where a body stops being the person's own. It screened in Panorama at the Berlinale.
