Flies

Fernando Eimbcke's 2026 Mexican film follows Olga, who lives by strict rules in a vast apartment block. She attaches herself to nobody and does not disturb her order; when financial necessity leads her to rent out a room, she finds the tenant has also slipped in his nine-year-old son. The idea is a bond being formed against one's will. Olga does not want the boy there and says so plainly, but daily repetition slowly ties them together, and the narrative does not present this as an emotional transformation. Eimbcke is a director who works with silence and repetition; the scenes are long, the dialogue sparse and the humour dry. The flat is almost the only setting and the camera rarely moves. Who it's for: those who like minimal Mexican cinema and quiet character drama. Who it's not for: viewers expecting an emotional close; the film does not provide one.
