What Floyd Norman: An Animated Life Is About
Floyd Norman became Disney's first Black animator in 1956. He worked on Sleeping Beauty and 101 Dalmatians, and then Walt Disney personally put him on the story team for The Jungle Book. After Disney's death in 1966 he left the studio and started his own company, developing the first Fat Albert special and producing segments for Sesame Street. He was retired at sixty-five and came back the next day. Michael Fiore and Erik Sharkey, who directed it together, watch a man in his eighties still drawing and still causing trouble. Animations built from Norman's own gag drawings run alongside the telling. Colleagues and friends talk, Whoopi Goldberg and Leonard Maltin among them. A quiet question sits underneath the film: when exactly does a studio decide somebody is too old.
