Fly Me to the Moon

Sasha Chuk Tsz-yin's 2024 Hong Kong film follows two sisters who move from Hunan to Hong Kong in the nineties. Language, school and money all become problems at once in the new city. At the centre is their father's addiction. The family try to manage it for years; the narrative gives the addiction as an ongoing condition rather than an event and follows the different responses of the two sisters. The director adapted her own novel and appears in the film. Three separate time periods are used. The tone is measured and there is no accusation. Who it's for: viewers of Hong Kong cinema and narratives of migration. Who it's not for: viewers for whom addiction and neglect within a family would be difficult.
