Food for Profit

A five-year investigation by Giulia Innocenzi and Pablo D'Ambrosi sets out the link between intensive livestock farming in Europe and politics. Water pollution, biodiversity loss, antibiotic resistance and the conditions of the migrants working on the farms are each taken in turn. The camera goes inside the sheds and into the rooms where decisions are taken. The most argued-over section is the crew setting up a fake agricultural lobby and meeting members of the European Parliament. Those meetings were recorded secretly and used in the film. While showing where Europe's tax money goes, the production takes an openly stated side; people defending the industry get to speak, but the film's own view is clear from the start. It was an unexpected box office success in Italy.
