The lives of several people living in the same Warsaw tenement under German occupation are tied together by songs: pre war ballads that survived into the occupation, and street songs mocking the occupiers that travelled from mouth to mouth. Leonard Buczkowski's film was the first feature made in Poland after the war, and it premiered on 8 January 1947 at the reopened Palladium cinema in Warsaw. In 1948 it was re-edited and reissued, the second version giving the Red Army a larger part as liberator and painting the occupation more darkly. More than 10.8 million people saw it within three years, roughly twice the usual attendance of the period.
