Fort Apache, the Bronx

Murphy, working out of the 41st Precinct in the South Bronx, has been in the same district for eighteen years and no longer believes he can save anyone. When two officers are shot dead in the area the administration starts applying pressure, and Murphy witnesses a killing committed by one of his own colleagues. Daniel Petrie made it with Paul Newman, who plays the policeman as a tired man in a moral corner. The production was protested by Bronx residents and local organisations while it was still shooting, the objection being that the neighbourhood was shown only through crime, drugs and ruin, and a notice was added at the front stating that it is fiction. The argument is still part of the film. Who it is for: viewers who like eighties American police films and Newman. Who it is not for: anyone who will find the film's portrait of the neighbourhood objectionable.
