What Fortune Is a Woman Is About
Oliver Branwell, an insurance investigator, goes to look into a fire at a manor house and finds himself facing Sarah, the woman he loved years before. Behind the fire lies a scheme of forgery: when a twin of the painting said to have burned turns up, the chain starts to come apart. But Branwell keeps what he knows out of his report, and that silence draws him into the scheme as well; before long the affair reaches blackmail and another death. Sidney Gilliat’s ninety five minute British film was adapted from Winston Graham’s novel and was released in America under a different title. Jack Hawkins and Arlene Dahl take the leads; it was completed in 1957.
