FBI agent Wesley Doyle is working a serial killer case known as God's Hand. A man named Fenton Meiks comes in and says the killer is his brother Adam. Flashbacks tell a childhood in 1979: their father believed he had received a divine instruction to destroy demons disguised as people. The turn at the end defines the film and changes everything about where the account is coming from. We will not write what it is here. It is Bill Paxton's first film as director, and he acts in it. Matthew McConaughey and Powers Boothe star. David Kirschner produced, Bill Butler shot it and Brian Tyler wrote the score. Lions Gate released it on 12 April 2002. It runs 99 minutes. On an 11 million dollar budget it grossed 17.4 million worldwide, 13.1 million of that in the US and Canada. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 76 percent. Roger Ebert gave it a full four stars and called it an extraordinary work with unexpected story turns. Who it is for: viewers who like thrillers built on religious fanaticism and family. Who it is not for: anyone who needs the film's moral position to be clear. The ending deliberately leaves open whether the father was right.
