Ricky has just come out of prison. He walks into a diner in Idaho. There he meets Beth. Beth works there as a waitress. The two get into his car and set off. They are heading for Washington. Something starts between them. Beth reads romance novels. She grows attached to Ricky quickly. What Ricky is after is something else. Beth wants to see California. Ricky wants money in a hurry. Those two wishes take them onto a hard road. Jon Jost builds the film in an unusual way. He uses collage, split screens and long solitary monologues. The tone is both tragic and comic. Howard Swain, Nancy Carlin and Kate Sannella appear in the ninety one minute film, an American production Jon Jost finished in 1993.
