What In China They Eat Dogs Is About
Arvid is a quiet bank clerk, dumped by his girlfriend for being boring. When a robbery goes wrong at his branch he behaves heroically, then learns why the robber came and decides he has ruined a man's life, so he sets out to rob his own bank to fix it. Once his brother Harald and Harald's peculiar associates get involved, the whole thing becomes a Danish black comedy. The title comes from the brother's moral instruction: in China they eat dogs, meaning right and wrong depend on where you are standing. Lasse Spang Olsen times the violence for laughs without deleting its consequences. Kim Bodnia and Nikolaj Lie Kaas star. Who it is for: viewers who like nineties Scandinavian black comedy and crime films that tip into absurdity. Who it is not for: anyone uneasy with brutality played as a joke.
