Comic 8

Anggy Umbara's 2014 Indonesian film follows eight people who try to rob the same bank at the same time. None knows about the others' plans, and when they all meet inside they are forced to work together. The cast is made up of well-known Indonesian stand-up comedians and the humour rests largely on their stage manner. Each character has a separate motive, delivered in flashback. The narrative runs on fast cutting, exaggerated action and looks straight to camera. It became an unexpected box office success at home and sequels followed. The joke density is high and the consistency low. Who it's for: those who like Indonesian popular cinema and stand-up-based comedy. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a tight heist plot; the film often abandons logic for a joke.
