What Lupin the Third: Jigen's Gravestone Is About
This entry in the Lupin series puts the gunman rather than the thief at the centre: Daisuke Jigen. Facing him is a legendary marksman named Yael Okuzaki who fires once and never misses, and everything between them comes down to speed. Takeshi Koike pulls the film away from Lupin's usual cheerfulness and into noir, with heavy shadow, little colour and hard violence. The design is in Koike's familiar sharp-lined manner and the fights are close to abstract. The story is short and direct; there is no treasure and no scheme, only two men waiting for each other. It is regarded as one of the best-liked spin-offs and produced a sequel. Who it is for: viewers who know the Lupin series and like stylised animation. Who it is not for: anyone expecting the franchise's comic register, since this is dark throughout.
