What Frank Serpico Is About
The documentary tells the story of Frank Serpico, who exposed the system of bribery in the New York police, in his own words. Trained as a social worker and an Italian among a mostly Irish force, he saw how ordinary graft had become; when nobody inside would listen to his complaints he testified before the Knapp Commission. During a drug raid no backup came, he was shot in the face, and whether that was an accident is still argued about. He spent the following forty years quietly, first in the Netherlands and then in upstate New York. Archive footage, interviews shot today and passages from Sidney Lumet’s 1973 film run into one another. Antonino D’Ambrosio’s ninety eight minute American documentary was completed in 2017.
