Freedom on My Mind

The documentary is about a struggle that took place in Mississippi. The subject is the right of Black citizens to vote. The years run from 1961 to 1964. Segregation was written into law at the time. Registering Black voters was blocked in practice. Local organisations worked to change that. Students came from all over the country to help. Close to a thousand of them went to Mississippi. What met them was violence. People were killed. The documentary tells it through the voices of those who lived it. Archive footage and interviews sit side by side. The film won the grand jury prize at Sundance. It was also nominated for an Academy Award. The hundred and nine minute documentary is the work of Marilyn Mulford and Connie Field, an American production finished in 1994.
