Friendship!

Shortly after the Wall comes down, two young East Germans, Veit and Tom, decide to go to America. The official reason is to see San Francisco; the real one is to find Veit's father, who left the country years ago. They have very little money, no English, and hitchhike across the whole country. Markus Goller builds it as a road comedy, but behind it stands the bewilderment of the moment: two young men in a world where their passports work for the first time. Matthias Schweighöfer and Friedrich Mücke star. It was a large hit in Germany. The story follows predictable roads, but the rapport between the two actors and the feel of the period carry it. Who it is for: viewers who like German comedy and road movies. Who it is not for: anyone looking to be surprised.
