The documentary examines German cinema between 1919 and 1933: the fourteen years from the founding of the Weimar Republic to the Nazis taking power. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, M, Metropolis and dozens of films barely known today come to the screen. The question it puts is this: what did these films show in advance? Rüdiger Suchsland's documentary rests on Siegfried Kracauer's book of 1947. Kracauer argued that German cinema between the wars carried a longing for strong authority. The film sets out that thesis but does not present it as the only truth; figures such as Volker Schlöndorff and Fatih Akın give their own views as well.
