What Hitchcock/Truffaut Is About
In 1962 François Truffaut wrote to Alfred Hitchcock proposing a long interview; the two men talked for a week, and the recordings became one of the most read books in film history. Kent Jones's documentary puts those tapes at the centre and sets present-day directors around them: Scorsese, Fincher, Assayas, Bogdanovich, Kiyoshi Kurosawa and others. Its best passages are the ones that take individual scenes apart, particularly the shower in Psycho and the use of colour in Vertigo. The argument is the same as the book's, that work regarded as entertainment was in fact minutely calculated. It is kept short. Who it is for: viewers interested in film history and in how directors actually work. Who it is not for: anyone who has not seen the Hitchcock films, since the surprises are described openly.
