What A Letter to Elia Is About
Martin Scorsese addresses Elia Kazan's influence on him in the form of a letter. The film carries Kazan from the Group Theatre to Hollywood and does not step around the wound opened by his testimony to HUAC in 1952. Its real attention, though, is on the films he made after that decision: On the Waterfront, East of Eden, Wild River and America America. Kent Jones co directed, Elias Koteas reads Kazan's own words, and most of the rest is Scorsese's voice. It screened at Venice in 2010, went out on the PBS series American Masters and won a Peabody.
