What Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father Is About
A filmmaker interviews everyone who knew his murdered childhood friend and assembles a film. He is making it for his friend's unborn son, so the boy will know his father. It begins as an act of remembrance. Then the legal case begins, and the film turns into something else entirely, an account of a system that failed to protect a child. The editing is deliberately fast and aggressive; the director is not trying to be neutral, because he is not. Kurt Kuenne directed. Bail legislation in Canada was changed after this case. A real warning: midway through, a child's death is disclosed, and the film deliberately gives you no preparation for it. Very few films will shake you this hard. Start knowing that.
