What From Saturday to Sunday Is About
Two typists go out on a double date one evening. Mary, the inexperienced one, gets up and runs when she is offered money for sex. In the cafe where she takes shelter she meets an ordinary man who has no money and offers her nothing. The film gives what follows: the two of them going home together and how what is between them moves along until morning. How far two people can trust each other is settled inside a single night, and without being spoken about. The account uses sound and music in one of the unusual ways of early talking cinema. Gustav Machaty’s sixty nine minute Czechoslovak film was completed in 1931.
