What Fugitive Pieces Is About
Jakob is a small boy hidden in a cupboard when his family is killed in Poland. Athos, a Greek geologist, finds him in the woods, smuggles him to Greece and hides him through the war. Jakob grows up, moves to Canada and becomes a writer, and the sounds of that day never stop, above all the sound of the sister he lost. Jeremy Podeswa made the film from Anne Michaels's novel. It treats trauma not as an event but as something that runs the whole length of a life, with past and present folded continuously into each other. Rade Šerbedžija plays Athos, Stephen Dillane the adult Jakob.
