What Fukuchan of Fukufuku Flats Is About
Fuku-chan is generous, easy going, a little heavy, living alone in a small block of flats and keeping his distance from women. When a woman from his past turns up again, the fear he has carried for years starts to be tested. Yosuke Fujita puts the ordinary residents of an ordinary neighbourhood at the centre and sets comedy alongside shame; the hero’s kindness reads less as a virtue than as a defence. Nobody achieves anything great and nobody is rescued, but everybody moves a little. A warm and painful piece of Japanese independent comedy.
