Julie works as a chambermaid in a luxury Paris hotel and lives in the suburbs with her two children. A train every morning, a train every evening. She arranges an interview for a job back in her own profession. That same week a national strike begins and public transport stops. She must not lose the job she has, must reach the interview, and must collect her children. The film is not interested in the strike. It is interested in the arithmetic of time: all its tension rests on a missed train, ten minutes late and an unanswered call. The director has cut it like a thriller and the score works the same way. The form is fast: stations crossed at a run, hotel corridors, the suburban motorway. The camera is behind Julie and almost never stops. Eric Gravel wrote and directed. It screened in the Horizons section of the Venice festival in 2021, where he won Best Director and Laure Calamy Best Actress. It opened in France in March 2022 and took four nominations at the 48th César Awards, winning editing and original score. Laure Calamy plays Julie and is in nearly every frame. Who it is for: viewers who like class treated in the language of the thriller. Who it is not for: anyone seeking relief. The film runs under pressure from beginning to end and its ending brings no full resolution.
