On 17 April 1975 the Khmer Rouge entered Phnom Penh and emptied the city. Among the crowds pushed onto the roads are Chou, her husband and their four-year-old son. During the march the boy is lost in the crowd and swept into another group the regime is moving. The next four years pass for Chou around a single question: where her son is, and staying alive long enough to find him. Denis Do's film starts from what his own mother lived through. It does not explain the regime, only shows the order it imposed: fields, quotas, confession meetings, families separated. The animation is plain and calm, and the violence mostly stays outside the frame, which sharpens the effect. Bérénice Bejo and Louis Garrel are among the voices. The Belgian, Cambodian, French and Luxembourgish co-production won the Cristal for best feature at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2018. Who it's for: Viewers who like adult animation, narratives of historical witness, and anyone curious about Cambodian history. Who it's not for: The subject is heavy and holds out no hope. The plainness of the animation will also strike some viewers as insufficient.
