What Gangster's Paradise: Jerusalema Is About
Lucky Kunene grew up in Soweto, clever enough for university and without the money for it. He starts with hijacking cars and moves on to something much bigger: taking over abandoned high-rises in Hillbrow, in central Johannesburg, and collecting the rent from the people living in them. He rises fast, and the money he touches strains what the police and the city can hold. Ralph Ziman drew the script from a syndicate that was actually doing this in Johannesburg. It was shot on location in Soweto and Hillbrow, and South Africa submitted it for the 2009 Academy Awards. What makes it uncomfortably persuasive is that it presents crime as an economic calculation rather than a moral one.
