Garden of Delights

Charlo and Carla are on their honeymoon. She is three months pregnant and he is furious about a marriage he entered for convenience, so he turns over the past and broods on The Garden of Earthly Delights, the Hieronymus Bosch painting the Surrealists loved. While she is bleeding he spends the night with a beautiful stranger, and the film presents marriage not as a home but as an arrangement nobody says out loud. Silvano Agosti made it as his directing debut with a score by Ennio Morricone, and Italian censors cut it: the original ran about ninety minutes, and the seventy two minute version listed in catalogues is that shortened copy. Maurice Ronet and Lea Massari star, and it was named among the ten best films of the year at Montreal in 1967.
