What Gerhard Richter Painting Is About
In the spring and summer of 2009 Gerhard Richter let a camera into his studio and allowed himself to be filmed while working on a series of large abstract paintings. That is exactly where the documentary’s force lies: paint going on, layers laid over one another, and the painter covering over surfaces he is not satisfied with and starting again. Richter has spent more than half a century trying techniques and ideas, working on the crises of history, the image as mass media makes it, and chance itself. Archive footage and conversations with critics and collaborators are in it as well. Corinna Belz directed and won the German Film Award for best documentary in 2012.
