What German Concentration Camps Factual Survey Is About
In the spring of 1945 the intention was to make a feature length report out of the footage Allied cameramen shot in the concentration camps, one that would document the Nazi regime and be shown to German audiences. The small team led by Sidney Bernstein included Stewart McAllister, Peter Tanner, Richard Crossman and Alfred Hitchcock as treatment adviser. Bernstein had seen Bergen-Belsen on 22 April 1945, a week after its liberation, and it was there that he resolved to make the film. By September 1945 British policy in Germany had shifted from denazification to reconstruction and the film was left unfinished. The Imperial War Museum completed it to the original team’s instructions, assembling the missing sixth reel, and the finished version was shown at the Berlin Film Festival in 2014.
