What Gilles' Wife Is About
Elise smiles when she thinks of her husband Gilles, keeps the house, and makes love to him gladly, and during her third pregnancy she begins to suspect that something is going on between him and her younger sister Victorine. She carries the pain mostly in silence: she listens to her husband, she asks her priest, she breaks picture frames, she weeps, and finally she settles on a way to keep him. Set in a working class district of the 1930s, the film shows a life in which Gilles works shifts at the blast furnaces, some days by daylight and some by night, and what that life leaves to his wife. Frédéric Fonteyne’s hundred and three minute film was adapted from the novel Madeleine Bourdouxhe published in 1937, and it screened in the Orizzonti section at Venice in 2004.
