Girl with Green Eyes

Kate has come to Dublin from the countryside and works behind a grocery counter. The room she shares with her friend Baba is small and the evenings all look alike. Then she meets a divorced writer much older than she is and the world widens; but the wider world starts colliding with everything that raised her, with family, with the church, with the language of her home town. Desmond Davis directed his first feature from a screenplay Edna O'Brien adapted from her own novel. It is about the nerve it took, in sixties Ireland, for a girl to want a life of her own, and it does not shrink the price she pays. Rita Tushingham carries the film; shyness and stubbornness sit in the same look. Lynn Redgrave, in one of her earliest screen roles, plays Baba.
